You are standing in one country and every website you open thinks you are in another. That is not a fault in your eSIM. It is how travel eSIMs are built, and it is a property of the plan you bought. Install a travel eSIM in Germany and your phone will show a German carrier in the status bar, get German signal bars, and hand you an IP address that geolocates to France or the Netherlands. Install one in Japan and the radio is Japanese while the IP is Hong Kong. This surprises almost everyone the first time, and the usual reaction is that something has gone wrong with the purchase. Nothing has gone wrong. Signal and data take two different paths, and only one of them stays in the country you are standing in.

Most providers never mention this. The information exists on their side, because their upstream network operator tells them exactly where each plan breaks out to the public internet, but it does not appear on the product page and it does not appear in the confirmation email. We take the opposite position. Every travel plan we sell carries a recorded breakout country, we show it on the plan, and the full list below covers every destination in the catalogue. Publishing it does not make our plans different from anyone else's. It just means you find out before you pay rather than after.

What a travel eSIM actually does at the network level

An eSIM is a subscriber identity, not a network. When you install a travel profile, your phone starts presenting an IMSI that belongs to the plan's sponsoring operator, and that operator is almost never a carrier in the country you are visiting. Your handset then scans for local radio networks that have a roaming agreement with that sponsor, attaches to one, and from that moment you are a foreign subscriber on a visited network. The radio is genuinely local. The tower is a few streets away, the signal strength is real, and the coverage you get is the coverage that local operator has.

Your data does not stop there. In the mode the industry calls home routed roaming, the visited network does not put your traffic on the internet itself. It wraps the packets in a tunnel and carries them back across the roaming interconnect to a gateway inside the sponsoring operator's own core network, and that gateway is where your session gets its public IP address and where your traffic finally reaches the open internet. The alternative arrangement, local breakout, hands your session to the visited network's own gateway so the IP is local. Travel eSIMs are overwhelmingly home routed, which is why the country on the IP is the country of the gateway rather than the country of the tower.

Why the exit country belongs to the plan, not to the destination

Because the exit is a gateway in the sponsoring operator's core network, it follows the plan, not the place. A destination in Western Europe usually breaks out inside Europe, often through a pair of gateways so the value we publish is two countries rather than one, and a session may land on either. Destinations across Asia and the Pacific commonly break out through Hong Kong or Singapore. Plenty of destinations in Africa, South Asia, Central Asia and the Balkans break out through the United Kingdom. A handful of destinations in the Americas and the Middle East break out through gateways that have no obvious geographic relationship to them at all, and a small number genuinely do exit inside the country you are visiting.

Two consequences follow, and both are visible in the list below. The first is that regional bundles have an exit country too, so a plan covering twenty countries at once gives you the same gateway in every one of them. The second is that two plans sold for the same destination can break out differently, because they can sit on different underlying agreements. That is why the list is per plan rather than per country, and why we do not publish a single tidy country-to-country mapping that would be wrong for some of the rows. Where a value is written as a pair or a set, any of those countries is possible on a given session. Where it is written as a region rather than a specific country, that is what our upstream reports, and we would rather show you the coarse truth than invent a precise-looking answer.

What the exit country actually changes

Everything that keys off your IP address sees the exit country. Streaming services show the catalogue licensed for the exit country, not the one for where you are sitting. Search results, shop pricing, currency, tax display and default language follow the exit country. Local services that expect a local connection, from transit apps to regional news paywalls, may behave as though you are abroad even though you are not. There is also a latency cost that has nothing to do with content licensing. If you are in Tokyo and your traffic is hairpinning through a gateway in another territory before it reaches the internet, every request makes that round trip twice, and video calls and games feel it.

The second category is account security checks. Many services score a login by comparing the IP country against the country they associate with the account, and a mismatch pushes you toward an extra verification step or an outright refusal. This is worth understanding rather than fearing. A mobile IP belongs to a carrier or an eSIM aggregator, and those address ranges are usually scored more gently than a datacentre range, which is why a roaming exit tends to produce friction rather than a hard block. Adding a VPN on top does not undo any of this. It replaces the visible IP with the VPN's exit, so you swap one mismatch for another, and datacentre ranges are exactly the ones that get scored hardest.

Every provider has a breakout country. Most simply do not publish it.

This is not a defect and it is not something we invented. Any travel eSIM that works by roaming has a gateway somewhere, and therefore has an exit country, whether or not the seller mentions it. If you buy a travel eSIM from a large app-based brand, its data still breaks out at some operator's core network, and the country of that gateway is just as arbitrary as ours. The difference is that most sellers treat it as internal plumbing, so the buyer discovers it when a streaming app shows the wrong catalogue or a login gets challenged, and then has to guess whether the eSIM is broken.

So we are not claiming to have solved a problem the rest of the market has. We are claiming that the information should be on the product page, because it is the single most common source of confusion after purchase and it costs nothing to disclose. There is a limit to what disclosure can do. We publish the breakout country our upstream operator reports for each plan, and that is the country the gateway sits in. Third-party geolocation databases occasionally label an address range slightly differently, so a lookup site may show you a neighbouring country for the same session. If you see that, the published value is still the right thing to reason from, and the lookup site is the thing that is approximate.

What an exit country is not

An exit country is not anonymity, and this is the part we will not soften. Your IMEI is presented to every network you attach to. The visited operator knows which cells you camped on and when, and that record exists regardless of what IP the far end of your session shows. The sponsoring operator holds subscriber and session records for the profile. A public IP that resolves to a different country changes what a website infers about you, and it changes nothing about what a mobile network observes about you. Anyone selling you an eSIM on the promise that it makes you untraceable is either confused or lying. We do not ask for identity documents and we do not keep an account for you, and neither of those facts is a statement about what carriers can see.

It also does not apply to our other product, and people confuse the two constantly. How to check what country your mobile data is actually exiting from

    Isolate the mobile connection

    Turn Wi-Fi off completely so the phone has no fallback, and confirm the status bar shows mobile data rather than a Wi-Fi symbol. Then switch off anything that rewrites your traffic: any VPN profile, any private relay or encrypted proxy feature in your operating system or browser, and any ad-blocking DNS service that tunnels traffic. If any of those are on, you will measure them instead of the eSIM.

    Read the address, not just the flag

    Open any IP lookup page and write down three things: the IP address itself, the country the lookup claims, and the ASN or network owner it names. The country flag on those pages comes from a geolocation database and is the least reliable field. The ASN is the part that tells you who actually operates the address range.

    Compare the exit against the network you are attached to

    Now look at which network your phone joined, in Settings under mobile network or carrier selection. If the visited carrier is a local operator and the IP country is somewhere else, you are looking at home routed roaming, and the IP country is your breakout country. If the two agree, that plan is on local breakout in that country.

    Tell a roaming exit from a proxy or a VPN

    Look up the ASN owner you noted. A mobile carrier, an MVNO or an IoT and eSIM aggregator means you are seeing a genuine roaming exit. A hosting or cloud provider means something is tunnelling your traffic, whether you meant it to or not. Reverse DNS on the address usually confirms it, since carrier ranges tend to carry operator naming and hosting ranges do not.

    Sanity check with latency

    Ping or load something you know is hosted in the country you are physically in, then compare against a local Wi-Fi connection if you can get one. A round trip far larger than the local connection gives is the hairpin to the exit gateway showing up in milliseconds. This is also the honest way to judge whether a distant exit will be a problem for calls or games before you commit to a longer plan.

    If a service refuses you because of the exit country

    Do not delete the eSIM profile and do not assume it is faulty. Work through the cheap options in order. Do the one blocked action over local Wi-Fi, since a single login or verification rarely needs to happen on mobile data. If the exit country matters to you for the whole trip, check the list below before buying and choose a plan whose published breakout country suits you, because we cannot change the gateway on an existing plan. Stacking a VPN on top usually makes an account-country check worse rather than better. And if a plan behaves differently from what we published, tell us, because a wrong row is a bug we want to fix.

Why does my eSIM show a different country than the one I am in?

Because your phone gets its signal from a local network but your data is carried back to a gateway inside the sponsoring operator's core network, and that gateway assigns your public IP. The industry calls this home routed roaming. The radio is local and real, the IP is wherever the gateway sits. It is normal, and it is why we publish the breakout country for every plan in the list below.

Is my eSIM broken, or did I get the wrong plan?

Almost certainly neither. An IP that resolves to another country is the expected result for a travel eSIM, not a fault. Check the published breakout country for the plan you bought against what you are seeing. If they match, the eSIM is working as designed. If they do not match at all, contact us, because that is worth investigating.

Can I choose or change the exit country?

You can choose it before you buy by picking a plan whose published breakout country suits you, which is what the full list below is for. You cannot change it afterwards. The exit is determined by the underlying network agreement behind the plan, not by a setting on our side or on your phone, so there is no request we could act on to move an active eSIM to a different gateway.

Will a VPN fix the country mismatch?

A VPN changes what websites see to the VPN's exit country instead, so it replaces one mismatch with another rather than removing the problem. It also moves you from a mobile carrier address range onto a datacentre range, and datacentre ranges are the ones most heavily penalised by account security checks. If a service is challenging you over location, a VPN often makes that worse.

Does an eSIM in another country make me anonymous?
