Before anything else, the argument against buying from us. This country is in the European Economic Area, so European roaming rules apply. If your usual number is from an EU or EEA country, it works on the mainland at your own domestic rates and you do not need to buy a thing. That is the honest answer for a large share of the people who land on this page, and we would rather say it than take the money.

For everyone else: it is easy to assume a country this comfortable has no paperwork on a SIM card. It does, and the requirement got stricter recently. Since the start of 2025 the electronic communications regulations require the customer to be identified when a mobile subscription or a prepaid card is set up. In a shop that means an original passport, a national identity card or a Norwegian driving licence, and the provider records which document was used. Online it means BankID, the Norwegian electronic identity, which a visitor does not have. The online route is effectively closed to you, so a local SIM is a shop errand.

One exception catches people out. Svalbard was left outside the European Economic Area agreement, so European roaming rules do not reach it and connections there are treated as rest of world. Anything bought for the mainland, ours included, should be checked against Svalbard separately rather than assumed to cover it.

The coverage story here is not about cities, it is about the shape of the country. Signal follows the road and the coast, and the road spends a great deal of its time inside mountains. Long tunnels, the passes over the fells, the inner arms of the fjords, the plateau crossings and the far north are where a bar quietly disappears, and the ferries between them are hit and miss. Download the maps, tickets and route before you drive, not while driving.

Data on these plans breaks out in France or the Netherlands, close enough that latency is not a factor. Local services that look for a domestic connection will see a European one instead, which matters for the few portals that fence themselves to the country. As everywhere on this site, that is a location check and not privacy.
