Data breakout: FR/NL/UK. Websites see a FR/NL/UK mobile IP, not a local one.
Where your data comes out
Plans for Spain break out in FR/NL/UK. A site or app that checks where you are connecting from sees a FR/NL/UK mobile IP rather than one in Spain - which matters most for banking apps, government services and anything geo-locked to Spain.
An exit country is not anonymity. It changes what a website sees, not who you are, and we would rather say that plainly than sell it as privacy.
Which networks you actually connect to
- Orange5G
- Movistar5G
In Spain these plans roam on Orange, Movistar. Your phone picks whichever is strongest where you are standing - you cannot choose one, and there is no local SIM to register in your name.

No ID with us. A local SIM is a different matter
The eSIM on this page needs no ID, no document and no registration. It roams on a foreign network rather than being issued locally, so there is nothing to sign and nothing to hand over - you install it before you arrive. A local SIM bought in the country is a different matter:
Spain has registered prepaid SIM buyers since 2007, which makes it one of the earliest such regimes in Europe rather than one of the post-2015 additions. The rule is older than most of the guides written about it.
SIM registration rules reviewed August 2026. They change - check before relying on this.
The counter, the road, and what a Spanish site sees
Spain registers the buyer at the till, and that is the whole of it. A passport or an EU or EEA identity card is enough, the shop enters your details before the line goes live, and you walk out connected. No residence number, no Spanish address, no waiting period. The friction here is not legal, it is opening hours: arrive in a small town on a Sunday and the phone shop is shut, and you are on hotel wifi until Monday.
The rule worth knowing before you decide is the European one. A prepaid SIM bought in any EU or EEA country works at its home rates across all the others under Regulation (EU) 2022/612, which runs until 30 June 2032. If Spain is the first stop on a longer trip, one Spanish card also covers Portugal, France and Italy. The fair use conditions exist to stop someone living permanently on a foreign line, not to catch a holiday.
Where our plans thin out is where every network thins out. The cities and the coast are dense. The Pyrenean and Picos valleys, the emptied interior between Zaragoza, Teruel and Soria, and the long tunnels on the high speed lines are not, and your handset takes whichever of the networks listed above is strongest at that second. You cannot pin it to a different one when the bars go.
Because these plans break out in France or the Netherlands, a Spanish site sees a European address that is not Spanish. Public administration portals, Cl@ve logins, your bank app and Spanish broadcaster catch up will read the session as coming from outside the country. That is simply what it is. And if you are staying a month, or you need a Spanish number for a delivery app or a rental deposit, buy the local SIM. It is the better tool for that job.
Local rules on this page were checked in 2026-08. They change, so confirm anything you are relying on.
