Sweden Travel eSIM

Sweden used to be an ask nothing country, and a great deal of travel writing still says so. That stopped being true on 1 August 2022, when registration of prepaid cards became mandatory: a card must carry a registered name and address before it can be used, and cards that were never registered were switched off on 1 February 2023. Anything written before those dates is describing a Sweden that no longer exists.

Identity has to be checked against a valid document or a trusted electronic identification, which in Swedish practice means BankID. A visitor has neither BankID nor a Swedish personal number, so what remains is an in store check or a coordination number, and both turn buying a SIM into an appointment rather than a purchase. That gap is the specific reason a roaming plan is worth more here than in the Netherlands, where nothing is asked at all.

The country is long and its people are not spread evenly along it. The south and the coasts are well served. Inland Norrland, the mountain roads towards the Norwegian border and the empty stretches of the inland highway are where sessions drop, and in winter the daylight runs out well before the signal comes back. Download maps and tickets before you leave a town, not after.

These plans break out in France or the Netherlands, so a Swedish service sees a European address that is not Swedish. Swedish electronic identification flows and bank apps are the ones most likely to notice, and national broadcaster catch up will read you as abroad. A Swedish SIM also carries the EU roaming right under Regulation (EU) 2022/612 until 30 June 2032. For a stay of months, do the shop visit.
