No ID with us. A local SIM is a different matter
The eSIM on this page needs no ID, no document and no registration. It roams on a foreign network rather than being issued locally, so there is nothing to sign and nothing to hand over - you install it before you arrive. A local SIM bought in the country is a different matter:
A mainland SIM requires real-name registration, which since 2019 has included a face scan at the point of sale. These plans break out in Hong Kong rather than on a mainland network, so a site sees a Hong Kong IP. We do not promise that any particular service will reach you.

A mainland line, and what the mainland internet is actually like
Buying a mainland SIM as a visitor is possible and the process is well drilled: an operator store or an airport counter, your original passport, and since 1 December 2019 a live facial check matched against the document photograph. Bring the physical passport: a photograph on your phone will not do, and the shop cannot skip the step.
A mainland line puts you on the mainland internet, and that is a different internet from the one you left. Access is filtered nationally, and a long list of widely used foreign sites and services is not reachable from an ordinary domestic connection. Cross-border network access is regulated too: a 2017 notice from the industry ministry requires approval for cross-border dedicated lines and virtual private networks used for cross-border business, and the framework has tightened since. The search, mail, maps and messaging you use at home may simply not load.
That is a fact about the country, not a sales pitch, and here we will be blunt: nothing on this page is a way around any of it. These plans roam on a foreign network rather than being issued locally and the session breaks out in Hong Kong, so what we can tell you is what a website sees, a Hong Kong address rather than a mainland one. What we cannot tell you is what any given service will do, and we will not pretend. Local law is your responsibility here as anywhere.
The network itself is genuinely impressive: high-speed rail corridors, metro systems, and coverage in mountain and desert regions most country maps leave blank. It thins in the far west, on the high plateau, in the deep interior of Xinjiang and Qinghai, and in long rail tunnels.
The case for buying locally is strong here, and it is not about data. If you are staying for months, working, or you need to be reachable on a Chinese number for a delivery, a taxi, a hotel check-in or a bank, a mainland SIM is the answer and the face scan is its price. A data-only roaming plan gives you data, not anything a Chinese service will treat as an identity. For a short trip that is usually the right trade; for a long one it is not.
