Data breakout: HK. Websites see a HK mobile IP, not a local one.
Where your data comes out
Plans for Thailand break out in HK. A site or app that checks where you are connecting from sees a HK mobile IP rather than one in Thailand - which matters most for banking apps, government services and anything geo-locked to Thailand.
An exit country is not anonymity. It changes what a website sees, not who you are, and we would rather say that plainly than sell it as privacy.
Which networks you actually connect to
- TrueMove H5G
- DTAC5G
In Thailand these plans roam on TrueMove H, DTAC. Your phone picks whichever is strongest where you are standing - you cannot choose one, and there is no local SIM to register in your name.

No ID with us. A local SIM is a different matter
The eSIM on this page needs no ID, no document and no registration. It roams on a foreign network rather than being issued locally, so there is nothing to sign and nothing to hand over - you install it before you arrive. A local SIM bought in the country is a different matter:
Thailand has required registration on every prepaid SIM since 2015, and visitors register on a passport at the point of sale. The session breaks out in Hong Kong, so Thai services that check for a local IP will not see one.
SIM registration rules reviewed August 2026. They change - check before relying on this.
Buying a Thai SIM in 2026, and what a Hong Kong exit changes
Thailand rewrote its SIM rules this year. A regulator notification published in the Government Gazette on 15 May 2026 took effect the following day, and it changed the counter experience for foreigners specifically: the passport is the primary identity document, registration happens in person at an operator branch or an authorised dealer, and a non-Thai may hold no more than three SIMs with any one operator. Tourist SIMs run for a fixed window and topping up does not extend it - when the window closes you register again.
The arrivals halls at the main international airports have operator counters, and the staff do the registration for you, which is why most travellers never read the rule they just complied with. The friction is time, not paperwork: a late landing can put you past a counter that has closed, the dealer shopfronts in town keep their own hours, and none of this is something you can finish later from a hotel room. In-person means in person.
Coverage is dense across Bangkok, the eastern seaboard and the tourist provinces. The thin places are predictable and worth planning around: inside the national parks, on the smaller islands once you walk away from the main village, on the longer ferry crossings, and on the hill roads between towns in the north. Download the offline map before you leave the guesthouse wifi, not after.
Data on these plans leaves Thailand and comes out in Hong Kong. The Thai-side consequence is narrow and specific: services that check where a connection appears from - government and immigration portals, Thai bank apps, domestic sports and streaming rights - will see a Hong Kong address rather than a Thai one, and some of them care. If you are staying for months, or you need a Thai number that a delivery app or a bank will accept as local, buy at the counter and take the queue. For two weeks of maps, messaging and a boarding pass, ours is installed before you land and there is nothing open at 1am that you need.
Local rules on this page were checked in 2026-08. They change, so confirm anything you are relying on.
