Many UK forms ask for a mobile number long before you have a UK SIM: a university application or enrolment form, a landlord or letting agent, an employer's onboarding, a new UK account that texts a code. If you only have a number from your home country, some of those steps become awkward or fail, and the number on file then changes the day you swap phones or countries. A UK +44 number you hold before you land solves that specific problem.

This page is written for someone who may buy nothing. It starts with what you can do for free, then explains what a BuyUKeSIM UK Number is, what it does not include, and a practical timeline from purchase to the day you land. It is a real UK mobile line on an eSIM, not a bank account, not a visa document and not a data plan.

Check the free options first

Before buying anything, find out whether you need a UK number at all. Many universities, employers and landlords accept an international number, or an email address, for the first contact. Ask them, and keep the answer in writing. If a form simply will not accept a foreign number, that is a reason to get a UK one. If it will, you can wait until you land and buy a local prepaid SIM in a shop, which usually needs no paperwork.

For GOV.UK One Login, the official guidance says you cannot get a security code by text message if your phone number is registered outside the UK, and that you will need an authenticator app or a UK mobile phone number instead. An authenticator app on a phone, tablet or computer is free and works from anywhere, so it is the first thing to try. Our page on the GOV.UK security code and non-UK numbers goes through it. Note that the UKVI account used for eVisa is a separate system, and we have found no statement that it requires a UK number. If a UKVI code does not arrive, resend it, check spam, try the other contact method (email or phone), check the contact details on the account are really yours, since an adviser may have entered their own, and use the official GOV.UK UKVI account recovery or contact route if you are locked out.

What a UK number does for you before arrival

The UK Number is a real UK mobile line on an eSIM, not VoIP, dedicated to you and unused when issued. It receives SMS and incoming calls, including while you are abroad, because it roams on UK carriers in about 190 countries. That means you can put a +44 number on a university form, give it to a landlord or employer, and use it to receive codes for UK accounts while you are still in your home country.

It also stays the same. If you change phones, move cities or go home for the summer, the number on your forms and accounts does not change, as long as the line is kept active. Standard SMS verification works with a real carrier line, but no provider can promise that a given bank, app or government service will accept a given number, and we do not.

What it does not do

A UK number is not a bank account. UK banks ask for proof of identity and usually a UK address, and a phone number is only one of the details on their form. It does not secure a tenancy, a job offer or a place on a course either. Landlords, employers and universities decide on their own checks, and the number is simply a contact detail they can reach.

The line includes no mobile data and no outgoing calls. Most people therefore buy a local UK plan with data after they land and keep this line for codes and incoming calls, or they use it as their permanent number and keep it topped up. Checkout is in crypto with no ID and no account needed to buy. That means no identity is needed to purchase, which is different from the number being hidden from the services you give it to.

A practical timeline

Buy and install the line a few weeks before departure, so there is time to fix a problem. Check your phone supports eSIM first: the install QR is single use, it installs once, it is never reissued, and UK number orders are not refunded. Turn off any VPN, iCloud Private Relay and Private DNS while installing. Then dial *132# (or *#100# as a fallback) to see your number, and give it out.

The first 6 months (180 days) are included in the $25 price, and $15 adds another 6 months. Longer periods can be paid up front at checkout. A line whose 6 months run out without a top-up lapses and cannot be recovered, so set a reminder and top up before the date. After you land, you can keep the line as your permanent UK number, and it keeps receiving codes if you travel home. Buyer reports on where the line works are published on our UK eSIM coverage page: most countries work, but reception is patchy in a few, including Russia, Hong Kong, China, Kazakhstan, Ghana and Turkmenistan.

How to get and use a UK number before you land

  1. 1

    Ask what is really required

Check with the university, landlord or employer whether a foreign number is accepted for now. Also set up a free authenticator app for GOV.UK One Login, which works without a UK number.

  2. 2

    Check your phone supports eSIM

Look for Add eSIM or Add Data Plan in your mobile settings, or dial *#06# and check an EID is shown. The install QR is single use and UK number orders are not refunded, so confirm this first.

  3. 3

    Buy and install before departure

Pay in crypto, with no ID or account needed. Turn off VPN, iCloud Private Relay and Private DNS, scan the QR once on the phone you will keep, and leave Data Roaming on for the eSIM line.

  4. 4

Check the number and give it out

Dial *132# on the eSIM line, or *#100# as a fallback, to see your +44 number. Put it on your forms and UK accounts, then test it with a low-stakes code.

  5. 5

Add a local plan after you land

The line has no data or outgoing calls. Buy a local UK prepaid or contract plan for data, and keep this line for codes and incoming calls.

  6. 6

Keep it topped up every 6 months

Set a reminder before day 180. Add 6 months for $15 or pay a longer period at checkout. A lapsed line cannot be recovered.

Questions & answers

Can I get a UK number before arriving in the UK?

Yes. The UK Number is delivered as an eSIM QR, so you can buy and install it from your home country and give out the +44 number before you land. Check your phone supports eSIM first, because the QR installs once and is never reissued.

How do I get a UK phone number from abroad without a UK address?

You do not need a UK address or an ID to buy ours. You pay in crypto and receive an eSIM QR. Physical SIMs ordered online usually need a UK delivery address, which is why an eSIM is the practical route from overseas.

Is there a UK SIM for international students before arrival?

A local prepaid SIM is the usual choice once you land, and it includes data. Before arrival, our UK Number gives you a +44 number for forms and codes, but it has no data or outgoing calls, so most students add a local plan afterwards.

Do I need a UK number for my student visa?

We are not aware of a rule that a student visa application requires a UK number, and we do not claim one. Follow the official GOV.UK instructions for your application. A UK number can be useful for university and accommodation forms that ask for a mobile.

Do I need a UK number for GOV.UK One Login?

GOV.UK says you cannot get a security code by text message if your phone number is registered outside the UK. You need an authenticator app or a UK mobile number instead. The authenticator app is free. The UKVI account for eVisa is separate, and we have found no statement that it requires a UK number.

Will a UK number help me open a UK bank account?

Not by itself. Banks need identity documents and usually a UK address, and a phone number is only one detail on the form. A UK number can receive their text codes, but we cannot promise that any bank accepts any number.

Does the number include data or outgoing calls?

No. It receives SMS and incoming calls only. Most people buy a local UK plan with data after they arrive and keep this line for codes, or use it as their permanent number.

What happens to the number if I go home or change phones?

It keeps receiving SMS and calls while you travel, roaming in about 190 countries. To move it to another phone you need a new install, and the QR is single use, so decide which phone it lives on. Top it up every 6 months or the line lapses and cannot be recovered.
