For anyone outside the UK asking whether a +44 eSIM line receives texts and calls abroad, whether it can call out, and whether it gives internet.
What a UK eSIM number can and cannot do when you are abroad
Incoming texts and calls work in most countries. Outgoing calls, outgoing texts and mobile data are not part of the line. Here is how that plays out, with buyer reports by country.

- Incoming SMS and calls: included, in most countries, via UK roaming on a local partner network
- Outgoing calls, outgoing SMS and mobile data: not included
- Buyer reports as of 20 October 2026: 736 reports, 82 countries, 695 worked and 41 did not
- Patchy by reports: Russia, mainland China and Hong Kong; check /uk-esim-coverage/ before relying on a country
- Roaming must be on for the +44 line; internet comes from Wi-Fi, another SIM or a travel eSIM
- The QR is single use, never reissued, and UK number orders are not refunded
Short answer: a BuyUKeSIM +44 line receives SMS and calls in most countries, because your phone registers on a local partner network under UK roaming. It does not make outgoing calls, it does not send texts, and it has no mobile data. These are not locked behind a setting. They are not part of the product.
Most confusion comes from treating the line as a full SIM. It is closer to a UK address for your phone: things can reach you on it, and you do everything else on Wi-Fi or another line. This page covers each capability once you are abroad, what buyers have reported by country, and the phone settings that decide whether the line registers. For a fix-it ladder when a text does not arrive, use the troubleshooting guide linked below. The plain facts table is at /uk-esim/ and /faq/.

Capability by capability, outside the UK
Incoming SMS. This is the main job of the line. A text sent to your +44 number reaches the phone as long as the phone has registered on a mobile network in the country you are in. The line needs a cellular signal from a partner network, even though it carries no data of its own.
Incoming calls. Included, with the same condition: the phone has to be registered on a network. Registration is the single point of failure, so a country where the line struggles to register is a country where both texts and calls struggle.
Outgoing calls and outgoing SMS. Not included. You cannot dial from the +44 line or send a text from it. To call someone, use your normal SIM, a local SIM, or a calling app over Wi-Fi.
Mobile data. Not included, in the UK or anywhere else. That surprises people who assume an eSIM always means data. An app that is already set up, such as WhatsApp, runs over whatever internet your phone has from Wi-Fi or another SIM. The +44 number only has to receive a code when the app asks for one.
What buyers report, country by country
Whether the line registers in a given country is the question that matters, so we publish buyer reports instead of a promise. As of the latest report in our data, 20 October 2026, there are 736 reports covering 82 countries: 695 saying the line worked and 41 saying it did not. The full table, including countries with a single report, is at /uk-esim-coverage/.
The failures are not spread evenly. Russia has 35 reports of success and 24 of failure. Mainland China has 11 and 6, and Hong Kong 11 and 5. In those three, roaming depends on the local partner network and the region, so treat the line as patchy and do not rely on it for a code you cannot miss. Smaller numbers are not conclusions: Armenia has 6 and 1, Ghana 2 and 1, Thailand 1 and 1, and Iran and Turkmenistan only have failure reports so far (2 and 1). Countries with many successful reports include Germany (57), the United States (53), Peru (43) and Spain (32).
Two cautions. These are what buyers told us, not a measurement we ran, and a country with few reports tells you little either way. And registering on a network is not the same as an app accepting the number: standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number. North Korea has no usable UK roaming at all.
Phone settings that decide whether it registers
Roaming has to be on for the +44 line. The line always registers on a local partner network, so with roaming off the phone can show no signal and receive nothing. On iPhone: Settings, Cellular (Mobile Data), select the +44 line, Data Roaming. On Android: Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs, select the +44 line, Roaming. Menu names shift between versions and brands. Turning roaming on does not give the line data, and it is not charged extra.
Give it time. First registration in some countries can take one to six hours, and retrying does not speed it up. Toggle airplane mode once, restart the phone, and request a code from a second service to tell a problem with the line from a problem with one platform.
Label your lines in the phone settings, for example UK and Home, so you do not switch off the wrong one at an airport.
How to get internet alongside the line
Wi-Fi covers messaging apps and is also what you need to install the eSIM, since the profile downloads when you scan the QR.
A local SIM bought on arrival gives you a number and data in that country and suits a long stay. Keep the +44 line in the second slot or eSIM profile.
A travel data eSIM adds data without a shop visit. BuyUKeSIM sells prepaid travel data by country and region at /travel-esim/. It is a separate product with its own QR, and unlike the UK number QR it can be reopened from your order page.
The UK + travel bundle at /bundle/ is one crypto payment that delivers two QR codes: the +44 line and a travel data plan. It is optional. Many people buy the +44 line alone and use Wi-Fi.
Before you buy
The UK number QR is single use. It installs once, is never reissued, and UK number orders are not refunded, so check your phone supports eSIM (/compatible-devices/) and install on stable Wi-Fi without interrupting the download. Turn VPN, iCloud Private Relay and Private DNS off while installing, then back on. Travel data eSIMs differ: their QR can be reopened.
The line is from $25 for the first 6 months, and keeping it is a $15 top-up per further 6 months (/topup/). A number that passes its end date is released and cannot be recovered. You pay in crypto and no identity is needed to buy.
How to set up the UK line for receiving abroad
- 1
Check eSIM support
Confirm the phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked before paying. The list is at /compatible-devices/. The UK number QR installs once and is never reissued.
- 2
Prepare the install
Connect to stable Wi-Fi, because the profile downloads when you scan the QR. Turn VPN, iCloud Private Relay and Private DNS off. Do not interrupt the download.
- 3
Install and label the line
Scan the QR in your phone's eSIM settings and name the new line something clear, such as UK.
- 4
Turn roaming on for the +44 line
In that line's settings, switch on Data Roaming (iPhone) or Roaming (Android). Without it the line may not register on a partner network.
- 5
Plan your internet separately
The +44 line has no data. Use Wi-Fi, your home SIM, a local SIM or a travel eSIM for internet.
- 6
Wait for signal, then request the code
Check the +44 line shows a network. First registration can take one to six hours in some countries. If nothing appears, toggle airplane mode once and restart.
- 7
Test with something low stakes
Request a code from a service you do not depend on first. Standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number.
Questions & answers
Does a UK eSIM work outside the UK?
The +44 line receives SMS and calls in most countries, because your phone registers on a local partner network. It gives no mobile data and makes no outgoing calls or texts. Reports by country are at /uk-esim-coverage/.
Will I get WhatsApp codes on a +44 number while abroad?
The text arrives like any SMS if your phone has registered on a network in that country. Whether WhatsApp sends it and accepts the number is up to WhatsApp. Standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number.
Can I call out from the UK eSIM number?
No. Outgoing calls and outgoing SMS are not included. Use your normal SIM, a local SIM, or a calling app over Wi-Fi.
Do I get internet on it?
No. The line has no mobile data, in the UK or abroad. Use Wi-Fi, a local SIM, a travel data eSIM at /travel-esim/, or the UK + travel bundle at /bundle/.
Do I need to turn roaming on?
Yes, for the +44 line. It registers on a local partner network, so with roaming off the phone can show no signal. It does not give the line data and is not charged extra.
Where does the line not work well?
By buyer reports, Russia, mainland China and Hong Kong are patchy, and a few countries have single failure reports. North Korea has no usable UK roaming. A country with few reports tells you little, so check /uk-esim-coverage/ before a trip that depends on it.
How long does it take to register after I land?
In some countries first registration takes one to six hours. Toggle airplane mode once, restart, and check roaming is on for the +44 line before assuming a fault.
Can I get a replacement QR if I change phone?
No. The UK number QR is single use and cannot be reused. The only route is your device's own eSIM transfer feature, and how well that works depends on your devices and settings.
What is the difference between the UK line and a travel data eSIM?
The UK line is a +44 number that receives SMS and calls. A travel eSIM is prepaid data for a destination and has no UK number. The travel QR can be reopened from your order page. The bundle gives you both after one crypto payment.
