For anyone seeing "this number is already in use", "too many attempts", "we couldn't send an SMS" or a silent wait for a code in WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal on a UK +44 eSIM line.
WhatsApp says the new UK number is already registered, or the code never arrives
Before you pay: an app can refuse a registration even when the line works, and we cannot lift that. After you pay: how to read the error and what is worth trying.

- A code from any other app proves the line receives SMS; a refusal is the app's decision about the registration
- "Already registered" does not by itself show the number was used before; a pending attempt, a forgotten account or the app's checks on your phone can all cause it
- Enter +44 then the number without the leading 0, wait out cooldowns, and try one app at a time
- The line carries incoming SMS and calls, not mobile data or outgoing
- Standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number
- The UK QR is single use and never reissued; UK number orders are not refunded and no replacement number is offered for an app refusal
Short answer first. When a messaging app says a number is already registered, or no code shows up, that is the app talking about its registration, not a verdict on the line. One simple test tells you which: ask a different app or service for a code to the same number. If that code arrives, the line is receiving SMS and the refusal belongs to the app you were using.
If you are reading this before buying, here is the honest version. Codes arrive as ordinary carrier SMS on a BuyUKeSIM +44 line, and standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number. An app can refuse a registration for reasons on its own side, and we cannot see or lift those. The eSIM QR is single use, it installs once and is never reissued, and UK number orders are not refunded. That is worth knowing before the sale, not after.
If you already have the line, the rest of this page explains what each error usually means, what costs nothing to try, and what does not help.

Before you buy: what happens if an app refuses the number
If you need the number for one specific app, plan for the case where that app says no. The app decides whether a registration goes through. It looks at the number, but also at the phone, the connection and the sign-up history of both. We cannot see those checks and we cannot change them.
We do not offer a replacement number or a refund because an app declined. A second line would sit behind the same phone and the same connection, so it would usually meet the same refusal, and the QR of a UK number is single use. We would rather say that up front than let it become an argument later.
What the line does give you is a real UK mobile number on an eSIM that receives incoming SMS and incoming calls. It does not include mobile data, outgoing calls or outgoing SMS, so it sits alongside your normal SIM. Details are on /uk-esim/ and the published terms are on /refund/.
What "already registered" or "already in use" can mean
The message reads as if someone else owned the number. It does not prove that. Each +44 line is published as unused before your first activation, and a previous owner is not the usual explanation for this error.
Other things produce the same wording. An earlier attempt of yours may have left a registration half finished on the app's side. The number may already be linked to an account of your own that you forgot about. Or the app is declining this attempt because of the phone or connection you are registering from, and shows its existing-account message. From the screen you cannot tell these apart, which is why the steps below start with the cheap, reversible ones.
The app is refusing the registration. A code from any other app or sender is proof that the line itself receives SMS.
Reading the other messages
"Too many attempts, try again later" is a cooldown. Stop requesting codes and wait it out; asking again every minute does not help delivery and tends to keep the lock in place.
"We couldn't send an SMS" or a code that never appears points to delivery, or to a number typed wrongly. Check the format first, then try the other-app test.
A code that arrives for one app but not another is the most useful clue you can get. It means the line works and the second app is declining. Telegram adds one wrinkle: its FAQ, checked October 2026, says it may send the login code inside Telegram instead of by SMS if you recently used one of its apps on another device. If Telegram is signed in anywhere, look there before concluding nothing was sent.
Things that do not help
Requesting codes over and over. It does nothing for delivery.
Moving the eSIM to another phone. An eSIM is tied to the phone that installed it, and the UK QR is single use and cannot be reissued, so you could lose a paid line that cannot be recovered. When this page says use another device, it means the app on another device, never the eSIM.
Installing the eSIM with a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or Private DNS on. Turn all three off while you install, because they can interrupt the profile download.
If nothing works
Run the other-app test and note the result. If a code from a different app arrives, the line is fine and the app is the one refusing. Wait several hours, delete and reinstall the app cleanly, and if you can, start the registration from another device while the eSIM stays where it is. The code still arrives by SMS on the phone holding the eSIM, and you type it in on the other device.
If no app delivers any code, check that the +44 line shows signal, using the troubleshooting guide linked below. Reception is patchy in a few markets according to buyer reports, Russia, China and Hong Kong among them, so look at /uk-esim-coverage/ for where you are. Your order and line status are at /number-status/.
We cannot promise that any app will accept the number, we do not issue replacement numbers for an app refusal, and UK number orders are not refunded. If a payment or order problem sits on top of this, the support chat can look at it.
What to try when a UK number is refused or no code comes
- 1
Check the number format
Enter the number in international format: +44, then the number without its leading 0, so 07123 456789 becomes +44 7123 456789. Telegram's FAQ asks for the international format, and a stray 0 is an easy typo to miss.
- 2
Stop and wait out any cooldown
If the app shows too many attempts, stop requesting codes and wait several hours before trying again.
- 3
Test with a different app
Ask a different app or service for a code to the same number. If it arrives, the line receives SMS and the refusal is the first app's decision about the registration.
- 4
Try one app at a time
Register one app, finish or abandon it, then move to the next. Several apps asking for codes at once makes it hard to tell which message belongs to which.
- 5
Try the call option once
When the text does not arrive, choose the call-for-code option after the timer ends. Incoming calls work on the line in most countries, but where an app filters SMS it usually filters voice codes too, and Telegram notes that code calls may be unavailable for particular carriers. Treat it as one more try, not a guarantee.
- 6
Restart and reinstall cleanly
Restart the phone, delete the app completely and install it again before registering.
- 7
Register from another device if the app keeps refusing
Install the app on another phone, a tablet or its desktop client and start registration there with the same +44 number. The eSIM stays in its phone, and the code still arrives there by SMS for you to type in. Never move the eSIM itself.
Questions & answers
WhatsApp says my new UK number is already registered. Is the number used or broken?
Neither is shown by that message. It is the app declining this registration. It can come from an earlier attempt of yours, an account you already hold on that number, or the app's own checks on your phone or connection. Ask a different app for a code: if it arrives, the line works.
Does "this number is already in use" mean a previous owner had it?
Not by itself. Each +44 line is published as unused before your first activation. The same wording appears for a half finished attempt from your side or for an existing account linked to the number.
Telegram or Signal says too many attempts, try again later. What should I do?
Wait several hours and do not request more codes in the meantime. Repeated requests do not help delivery and can keep the lock in place.
The code arrives for another service but not for WhatsApp. Why?
That result means the line receives SMS. WhatsApp is the one declining the registration, for reasons on its own side that we cannot see or lift. Wait, reinstall cleanly, and try registering from another device with the eSIM left where it is.
Should I type the number with the 0 after +44?
No. Use +44 followed by the number without the leading 0, so 07123 456789 becomes +44 7123 456789.
Can I use the call option instead of the text?
You can try it once. Incoming calls work on the line in most countries, but where an app filters SMS it usually filters voice codes too, so it does not always work.
Do I need Wi-Fi or mobile data for the code?
The app needs some internet connection, which can be Wi-Fi or your normal SIM. The SMS itself arrives on the +44 line, so that line needs signal. The UK line has no data of its own.
Can I get a replacement number or a refund if the app refuses it?
No. A replacement line would sit behind the same phone and connection, the UK QR is single use and never reissued, and UK number orders are not refunded. Knowing this before you buy is the point of this page.
Will the number work with every app?
No provider can promise that. Standard SMS verification works, but no provider can promise that a given service accepts a given number.
Should I move the eSIM to another phone to try again?
No. The eSIM is tied to the phone that installed it, and the UK QR cannot be reissued. If you want a different device, move the app, not the eSIM.
